Happy weekend!

I enjoyed this episode from Pick a Disc where Matt Latham and guest, Colin Jackson-Brown, discuss the music in the Showtime series, Yellow Jackets. It's a show full of 90s music and they talk about their favorite songs from the show. Being based in the UK, it's interesting to hear that some bands that we're familiar with in the States didn't exactly crossover across the pond!
With the under-5 covid vaccine finally coming out this week (!!!) so are a lot of emotions, which I have been pouring into "Memos from Motherhood (Or, I Gave Birth During a Pandemic?!)", a podcast that makes meaning of bringing life into the world during a global pandemic. bit.ly/memosfrommotherhood
And because I took your marketing class a few weeks ago, Lauren, I'll just end this with saying if you're interested, I've included more info below :-)
Memos from Motherhood features two friends: Misa, a Black American woman from NYC, and Veena, a South Asian American woman from LA. Unlike most parenting podcasts that focus on advice, Misa and Veena tap into their training as anthropologists to unpack the personal and political nuances of pandemic parenthood.
If you are looking for something lighter, Ringer Food with Juliet Litman. As someone who loves snacking, a great way to find out about new things to try. I’m hooked on vanilla bean Mush now.
I just finished ALLIES, a show about the War in Afghanistan told through the lens of the Afghan translators and interpreters hired during the 20 year war. A dense show that’s centered on very human and intimate stories. It was great!
Disasterpiece Theatre just finished its first season: "Ever watched a movie and thought- wait WTF? Join disaster response expert Ana Visneski and her producer Brandon "Rev" Wentz as they talk to various experts about the movies we love. From giant sharks to drilling on asteroids…we talk about that moment of wait. WTF? That’s not how that works!"
This week's episode of YKS pod was particularly funny. Although the humor isn't for all, I appreciate their progressive views when looking at the world through "kickstarter eyes"
I've really been enjoying Mother Country Radicals, the story of the Weather Underground told by the son of two of the members. It's a fascinating story, and really well written and presented.
I recommend a new podcast that just came out: Spiraling Higher. Gina and Sam discuss healing, manifestation, spirituality. I just listened to the first 2 episodes and, although I know some people might think the topic is "hippie dippie," if you actually listen to it, it is truly very helpful and insightful. I never got bored and I've learned a lot already from their podcast.
The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi is always great- he 'debunks silver linings' bringing on guests to dive into the worst life has offered. He had breast cancer survivor Carleigh Scott this week.
Baz Luhrmann’s visually spectacular ELVIS movie releases in cinemas this week, Popcorn Podcast reviews the film AND interviews director Baz Luhrmann, Olivia DeJonge (Priscilla Presley), Oscar-winner Catherine Martin and producer Schuyler Weiss:
Threshold podcast! It's an incredible show about the environment that tackles really tough topics but never loses sight of the people and humanity of its subjects. The latest season is called "Time to 1.5" and looks at the time we're living through right now - the time until we hit 1.5C of warming. There's an amazing episode about the atmosphere called This Most Excellent Canopy that takes you on a journey through the thing at the very heart of the climate crisis but one we literally can't see.
Threshold - https://www.thresholdpodcast.org/ ! Masterful environmental storytelling - masterful storytelling of any kind. They won a Peabody for their last season and this season, they are tackling the moment we're living in right now with the time we have left before we hit 1.5C of warming. But it's not all doom and gloom - it's clear eyed but also hopeful. It's critical listening for all of humanity.
[Full disclosure that I'm the managing editor but I've been a fan of the show long before I worked with them!]
Just started listening to the Ringer's "Trial by Content" this week — a great new pop culture game show, hosted by three former "Lost" recappers who have great chemistry together. Recommend starting with the most recent episode, "The Best John Williams Theme." Lots of off-tune humming of classic film music that I found deeply endearing.
A couple of things I'm working on right now are Deliver Us From Ervil: an epic true crime story about a fundamentalist Mormon community turned cult turned sophisticated organised crime family. The crime family were behind the 4 O'Clock Murders of 1988 - the 34th anniversary of which is coming up in a few days on 27th June. It's told in an unusual slow-burn kinda way that somehow reminded me of a Coen brothers film. https://pod.link/1621121335
And Call Me Mother, an interview series hosted by British journalist and author Shon Faye - each week she speaks to a queer pioneer about their life and times in a bid to deepen our understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences and also show that we all belong to a much broader and richer cultural history than we are often taught. https://pod.link/1556479286
As for something I'm not working on, I just started listening to Suave - just heard one episode so far but I'm really enjoying it and looking forward to listening to the next. https://pod.link/1548544921
And my comfort listen is The Complete Guide to Everything, which I've been listening to for over 10 years now and still look forward to every week. https://pod.link/119832920
Bring Birds Back is a great show about the joy of birds and the ways that we can all help them through simple, everyday actions. It follows the journey of Tenijah Hamilton, a birder who discovered her love of birds and nature during the pandemic - like a lot of people. She talks to bird enthusiasts from different backgrounds, identities, and communities, and gives people different ways to look at issues in the birding and environmental world.
This is a 2021 true mystery sans murder! It’s from Jake Warren and the lovely, talented, endearing Brits at Message Heard. The title is FINDING NATASHA, and Jake’s former ballerina mom is the main character. Enjoy! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/finding-natasha/id1564064848
While the host's departure from Gimlet was problematic, I can't deny that I'm enjoy Cryto Island a ton. This is exactly the skeptical, curious, puzzled examination of crypto currency that I've been looking for.
The Best Advice Show with Zac Rosen — I can’t recommend it highly enough! Episodes are very short and come out a couple of times a week. Each one explores a little bit of life-hack-type advice contributed by listeners calling in to the tip line, or from people Zac knows. Often amusing, sometimes bizarre, but ALWAYS interesting and helpful. I’ve got it on auto-download and am always delighted when a new one pops up in my feed!
Parks and Recollection. It's a fun episode-by-episode revisiting of Parks and Recreation by the cast and crew. It's nice to get the inside scoop on how it was made. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parks-and-recollection/id1583327243
Since I write a book related newsletter on Substack, I listen to mainly "bookish" podcasts and a few of my favorites are:
What Should I Read next - https://modernmrsdarcy.com/what-should-i-read-next/
Strong Sense of Place -https://strongsenseofplace.com/podcasts/
Sarah's Bookshelves - https://www.sarahsbookshelves.com/category/podcast/

I really loved a new podcast on life in a doomsday apocalyptic cult called Worldwide: The Unchosen Church. The sound design and stories told are amazing. Sooo good. A lot of climate shows are really depressing but this one isn't. It's clear eyed about what we're facing but also hopeful.
[full disclosure I'm the managing editor of Threshold but I've been a huge fan since the beginning]

I just listened to the new episode of Call Me Mother this morning and loved it!
So glad to hear that! I've heard the first episode four or five times now and still find Donna so touching to listen to.

What did you think of the last episode of Reply All?
I haven't listened to the last episode yet. It's in my queue.
Let me know what you think1
I just listened to the Sounds Like a Cult: The cult of True Crime episode and it was fascinating to learn and think about the eco system of true crime as entertainment. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Vy1HEPVt8pYGtlHsUQD64?si=88d5162b91cb4b02
I love this show!
Book Reviews Kill - great podcast where two chums delve deep
Into the world of Fantasy Sci Fi. Horror novels. They have some pretty big authors lined up
In the next few weeks to interview too
I LOVED Three Million Acres (a new Audible Original by my talented friend Maria Luisa Tucker): https://www.audible.com/pd/Three-Million-Acres-Podcast/B09X63F9K7
It's an incredibly artful piece of personal storytelling, paired with some essential wisdom about love and family.
(Sorry to be late to the party, but this is SO worth a listen)
I've been absolutely loving "Newts!" It is so well done, fun, and super engaging.
